Measurement
A semantic Value Type representing physical quantities, combining amount and a unit of measure.
type: data-model · status: draft · abstraction: instance
What it is
Measurement holds a physical or operational quantity as a number with an explicit unit, such as 10.5 kg, 400 mm or 20 °C. Each Measurement Property identifies the kind of quantity it accepts, so IMOS can convert between suitable units, compare values safely and reject incompatible values.
The platform also understands how measurements combine in calculations. For example, multiplying sheet area by paper basis weight can produce sheet mass, while adding a width to a basis weight is rejected. Measurements that share the same underlying dimensions can still retain different business meanings: width and thickness are both lengths, but IMOS does not treat them as interchangeable automatically.
Percentages, ratios and multipliers do not carry a unit and therefore use Number rather than Measurement. A percentage such as 25% is stored as the Number 0.25.
Why it exists
Manufacturing is physics. A bill of materials cannot simply state "5 steel". It must explicitly declare dimensions, weights, and volumes. A dedicated Measurement type ensures calculations are safe, conversions are automatic, and tenant data can be reliably exchanged or verified against canonical limits.
